Some courses have an online component, but attendance on campus is still required.

The open labs on the Scott Northern Wake and Public Safety Education campuses are available only for Wake Tech Nurse Aide students. Bring your Wake Tech ID for verification, and note your current or previous instructor.

Open lab is for self-practice of skills learned in the class/lab setting. A monitor/instructor is there for clarification of skills – not for instruction. When using the open lab, be proactive with your practicing your skills. Call 919-747-0120 to verify changes to open lab availability.

Professional licensure

Wake Tech academic programs (credit and non-credit) that are designed to lead to professional licenses are tied to North Carolina or national certifications. If you intend to pursue professional licenses outside North Carolina once you have completed your academic program at Wake Tech, please refer to the Professional Licensure section of the college's distance education authorization page for additional information.

Don't have enough money to pay for a course? Right now, Wake Tech's Propel program offers scholarships that cover the cost of registration and fees.

NOTE: The Propel Scholarship Application is currently closed and will reopen July 1.

Wake Tech also has scholarships tied to the Nurse Aide program, as well as information about available jobs at area health care facilities.

This course prepares graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis is on the aging process, including mental, social and physical needs of the elderly; patient's rights; nutrition management; elimination procedures; safe environment; restorative services; personal and special care procedures and activities; human body structure and function and related common disease/disorders; communication and documentation; death and dying; and roles of the nurse aide and health team members. A skill competency evaluation is required. The course includes class, laboratory, and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill competency evaluation administered by Credentia, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide I by DHSR - N.C. Division of Facility Services
Registration Instructions NA I:

Prior to the first day of class, students must pay ($119.00 in addition to class tuition), for the medical documentation manager through Castle Branch: https://portal.castlebranch.com/WL15.
Prior to the first day of class, students should have submitted the background and drug screen. (Issued by Castle Branch).
Students should begin obtaining all mandatory paperwork/immunizations noted by Castle branch. (Failure to have all mandatory paperwork completed by the due date noted in the class schedule, will result in dismissal from the program without the ability of a refund).
Castle Branch instructions: Go to website: https://portal.castlebranch.com/WL15. Select: Nurse Aide. Order Package Code: WM83-background, drug, and medical documentation (very important to choose this code). *Note, this is a onetime cost of $119.00*. This site will house all of the mandatory paperwork/immunizations etc. submitted by you. These immunizations can be updated annually. *Begin Drug and Background screening prior to course entrance.
Begin uploading mandatory documents. *Please note that if the class attends Wake Med or Duke hospital for clinicals, an additional cost may be needed for the clinical site's "Rotation Manager".
The Nursing Division Advisory Committee meets regularly for discussion regarding the Nurse Aide program needs.

Module B - Demonstrate an understanding of infection prevention and how the chain of infection relates to the work of a nurse aide

Module C - Describe the role of the nurse aide in dealing with emergencies in a health care facility

Module D - Describe successful and unsuccessful techniques of communication with residents

Module E - Describe a resident's rights and what the nurse aide's role is in maintaining these rights and preventing abuse

Module F - Identify caring behaviors consistent with treating a resident with dignity

Module G - Explain the role of the nurse aide in basic restorative care

Module H - Describe the structure, function, changes, common disorders, and the role of the nurse aide related to the integumentary, musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urinary, reproductive, endocrine, and immune systems.

Module I - Describe principles of body mechanics that help prevent injury

Module J - Describe nutritional and hydration requirements of the older adult

Module K - Identify safety interventions that the nurse aide can do to create an environment for restraint elimination or reduction as well as the proper use of restraints and the negative effects of restraint use

Module L - Identify effective communication with members of the health care team by reporting and recording information correctly

Module M - Identify the role of the nurse aide in each step of the nursing process

Module N - Describe events that might occur in a health care facility that would require an incident report and list the information to be included on the report

Module O - Describe the importance of a nurse aide's ability to think critically while performing resident care

Please note that certain immunizations require prompt attention due to the clinical deadline. Example: Tuberculosis (TB) screening has four ways a student can obtain this immunization. One of these ways includes a Two-Step TB test that can only be administered 1 week apart. Failure to complete these immunization requirements, could result in dismissal from the program."

This course prepares students to perform more complex skills for patients or residents, regardless of setting. A skill/competency evaluation is required. The course includes classes, laboratory sessions, and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and skill/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply for listing as a Nurse Aide ll by the North Carolina Board of Nursing Nurse Aide Registry. In all employment settings, the listed Nurse Aide ll will work under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel.

Course Objectives

Module 1 - Demonstrates participation in delegation with the Nurse

Module 2 - Demonstrates operation of oxygen equipment as directed by Nurse

Module 3 - Demonstrates ability to create a sterile field and maintain sterile technique

Module 4 - Demonstrates changing a sterile dressing for wounds over 48 hours old

Module 5 - Demonstrates ability to perform oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal suctioning on a conscious and an unconscious client

Module 6 - Demonstrates tracheostomy care for client with an established tracheostomy

Module 7 - Demonstrates ability to assemble and flush tubing during set-up, monitor IV flow rate, redress IV site, and properly discontinue a peripheral intravenous infusion

Module 8 - Demonstrates male and female urinary catheterization using sterile technique

Module 9 - Demonstrates proper technique for adding enteral feeding to an existing infusion, adding enteral feeding to an intermittent tube, and discontinuing an N/G tube

Module 10 - Provides care to a patient with an established ostomy by: obtaining a specimen, irrigating, pouching, and providing routine site care

Module 11 - Demonstrates the break-up and removal of a fecal impaction

Module 12 - Demostrates the technique of finger stick capillary blood glucose testing

Frequently asked questions

No, you do not have to be a Wake Tech student to take a Nurse Aide class.


You may register online for a class or you may come in to one of the Nurse Aide Offices to register in person. Please call 919-747-0120 before coming to the campus to ensure someone is available to help you.


You may have a blood test done to show proof of immunity.


There are no prerequisites, but you must be at least 16½ years old by the first day of class.


There is no book for the Nurse Aide I class.


There is no orientation session, but you do need to thoroughly read the Nurse Aide syllabus, which can be found on our website.


You may enroll in a Nurse Aide class up to the 10% point of the class, as long as there is seating available.


Yes, Wake Tech offers Nurse Aide classes during the Summer term.


We offer classes year-round and have new classes starting almost every month at the Scott Northern Wake Campus, Perry Health Science Campus and Public Safety Education Campus. We offer day, evening and weekend classes. We also offer classes that are a mix of in-person and online sessions. Look closely at every section, as schedules can be very different.


There is no financial aid, but financial assistance may be available through the Propel program. Email [email protected] for more information.


A confirmation email from your registration will be sent to your Wake Tech email. If you need assistance with your Wake Tech email, call the Help Desk at 919-866-7000.


You need to register and pay the $250 tuition, go to the CastleBranch website, choose package WM83 and pay $116 for your criminal background check, drug test and medical documentation manager. CastleBranch will tell you where to go to submit your urine sample before class begins.


The clinical paperwork is due prior to the clinical prep and orientation date. Submit copies of your Social Security card and other official signature-bearing ID to your instructor then upload the rest of your paperwork to CastleBranch as early as possible to allow time for review and acceptance.


Scrubs need to be worn only during clinical. Please dress modestly for class and lab.


Review the Class Withdrawal/Transfer Policy on the Nurse Aide I syllabus. Email [email protected] and include your name, your Wake Tech ID number, the section number of your class, your home mailing address and phone number and explain what you would like to do.
