Neuro Courses

Learn about the human nervous system or prepare for electroneurodiagnostic certification exams with these courses.

The courses are hybrid, combining seated and online learning. Students will meet in class via Microsoft Teams and then complete further study via Blackboard online from their computers.

Industry-recognized credential: Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R.EEG.T.) and Certification for Neurophysiological Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM), from the American Board of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET)

This course is offered to both graduates of the EDT program and EDT professionals in the field to prepare for their CNIM exam. The course is lecture only and is fully online to allow students from across the region to participate. Principles covered follow the practice analysis for the CNIM provide by ABRET. These include Preparation and Application of Fundamental Concepts, Intraoperative Phase, Post-Operative Phase, Provider Communication and Documentation, and Safety and Ethics.

Course Objectives

o Discuss anatomy, physiology, and pathways important to IONM
o Explain common indications for IONM
o Know the recommended modalities for common surgical cases
o Discuss instrumentation, settings, and montages unique to IONM
o Recognize common artifacts encountered during recordings and basic techniques of troubleshooting.
o Explain principles of stimulation
o Recognize and Explain measurement of applicable waveforms and responses
o Know the criteria for significant changes occurring during recordings
o Know effects of common anesthetic agents
o Know effects of physiological variables on monitoring results
o Analyze principles of infection control
o Examine and describe ethics and legal/regulatory standards.

This course covers the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the diseases that affect it. Topics include anatomy and physiology of neuron, brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves and neurovasculature. Upon completion, students should be able to understand the structure and function of the nervous system its diseases.

Course Objectives

o Describe the structure and physiology of the neuron
o Explain the basic genesis of the nervous system
o Describe the anatomy of the brain, associated structures, and the skull
o Explain the basic functions of the various intracranial structures
o Examine the clinical problems of the brain and correlate them to different pathological conditions
o Discuss the arterio-venous system of the brain
o Identify the cranial nerves and briefly describe their function
o Examine the clinical problems of cranial nerves and correlate them to different pathological conditions
o Discuss the autonomic nervous system
o Discuss the structures and functions of the spine and spinal cord
o Examine the clinical problems of the spinal cord and correlate them to different pathological conditions

This course will provide Neurodiagnostic Professionals in a supervisory role with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively manage and function in a Neurodiagnostic Department. This course is designed to help gain new leadership techniques and refine old skills to manage a team, including being a team player, effective management, assertive communication, examining and understanding Ethics and Legal and Regulatory Standards, analyze principles of infection control, techniques for scheduling and billing, creating and implementation of policies.

Course Objectives

1. Give examples and demonstrate effective management and assertive communication.
2. Describe ethics and legal regulatory standards.
3. Produce a departmental policy.
4. Produce a work schedule for staff.
