Mental Health Technician

Gain the knowledge and skills needed to work with people diagnosed with a mental illness. Get prepared to sit for the Level 1 American Association of Psychiatric Technicians Certification Exam and obtain an entry-level position as a psychiatric aide or mental health technician.

Professional licensure

Wake Tech academic programs (credit and non-credit) that are designed to lead to professional licenses are tied to North Carolina or national certifications. If you intend to pursue professional licenses outside North Carolina once you have completed your academic program at Wake Tech, please refer to the Professional Licensure section of the college's distance education authorization page for additional information.

Mental Health Technician

Course ID: MHT-3000A3   |   Overview

This course is designed to prepare participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively promote empathy, support and healing when working with people diagnosed with a mental illness. The course focuses on understanding the healthcare environment, mental health care: past and present, the caregiver’s therapeutic skills, mental health problems throughout the life cycle, clients with psychological problems, and clients with psychosocial problems. Upon successful completion of the course, you will be prepared to sit for the Level 1 American Association of Psychiatric Technicians (AAPT) Certification Exam. This course will prepare you for entry level positions as Psychiatric Technician/Aides or Mental Health Technicians.
