This 348-hour course teaches students how to care for natural hair without using hair color, perms, relaxers, or other chemicals. The course includes styling techniques such as braiding, twisting, wrapping, extending, and locking natural hair. It also covers bacteriology and infection control, client consultations, business management, professional ethics, and more. Students will be able to practice and apply their skills on clients who visit the Wake Tech salon. Upon completion of the course, they will be able to take the NC State Board of Cosmetic Art's exam to become a licensed Natural Hair Care Specialist.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to state the difference between cleaning, disinfection and sterilization.

The student will be able to identify infection control procedures in the salon.


The student will learn to select wisely, care for and use properly the commercial products that are related to the application of natural hair treatments.

The student will develop the technical skills required in the practice of a natural hair beauty culture.

The student will be able to identify and create protective style techniques for natural hair.

The student will prepare for state board examinations to obtain a license to practice natural hair.

This introductory course (the first of a four-part series) covers basic cosmetology concepts and provides the theory and basic practical beginning portion of your training. This course covers the broader concepts of cosmetology such as safety, product knowledge, chemistry, manicuring, chemical restructuring, and hair coloring. To simulate a salon environment, the course includes hands-on training in basic skin care, scalp treatments, shampooing, conditioning, haircuts, wigs, and related topics.
This course will be taught in Spanish and English.

Perform services to the public safely and by applying concepts of all phases of Cosmetology in a salon setting.

This supplementary course allows current students to earn the additional hours required to sit for the NC State Cosmetic Arts Hair Care Braiding License Exam. The course reinforces theory, provides time to practice skills, and reviews sanitation and infection control practices. It also includes client consultation, business management, professional ethics, and other related topics.

Course Objectives

The student will develop the technical skills required in the practice of a natural hair beauty culture.

The student will learn to select wisely, care for, and use properly the commercial products that are related to the application of natural hair treatments.

The student will be encouraged to keep abreast of the new and unique developments in the practice of their elected course of study.

The student will strive for the establishment of methodical, effective habits of performance. Students are taught to cooperate with an employer, employees and patrons.

The student will prepare for state board examinations in order to obtain a license to practice natural hair.


Outline of Instruction

Instructor will reinforce NCSBCA rules, regulations, and safety methods to prevent salon accidents and ensure sanitation procedures are followed.

Course will provide opportunities for students to work with live models to practice client consultations, effective communication and record-keeping.
