Many North Carolina towns are in need of new, trained code enforcement officers due to the increase in business and residential construction projects and because experienced inspectors are reaching retirement age.
Wake Tech offers both continuing education credits for veteran inspectors and classes aspiring inspectors need to work in the field of code inspection:
Wake Tech also offers courses to provide fire prevention code enforcement officials an overview of North Carolina building regulations. Exam preparation courses for general contractors and electrical contractors are also available.

This course is for the Electrical Level III Code Enforcement Official responsible for inspecting electrical installations in all types of construction of unlimited size. The course builds on the Electrical Levels I and II Standard Inspection courses. On completion, participants will have a better understanding of the Electrical Code of the NC Building Code and how to apply it to inspections. With successful completion of this course and the Law and Administration courses – in conjunction with other education and experience requirements specified by the NC Code Officials Qualification Board – participants will be eligible to take the Electrical Level III State examination for inspector certification.

It builds on the Electrical Standard Level I Inspection course. This course is a review of the laws, codes, and procedures covered by the NC General Contractors License Examination for residential and light construction, including all one- and two-family dwellings covered by the NC Residential Code. The course covers blueprint reading, cost estimation, quantity take-off, OSHA laws and regulations, the NC Residential Building Code, construction practices, and construction management. Upon completion, participants will be prepared to take the licensure exam for the Residential Classification of the NC General Contractors License, as administered by the NC Licensing Board of General Contractors.

This course prepares students for all classifications of the North Carolina Electrical Contractor’s Exam, with special focus on limited, intermediate, and unlimited classifications. Build knowledge and skill in calculations, branch and feeder conductor and overcurrent sizing; motor and HVAC branch and feeder conductor; motor overload and short circuit; ground fault protection sizing; raceway; and box fill. Course emphasis is on the National Electrical Code (NEC Code Book) and how to navigate it. The course also offers time-saving tips for taking the exam. This course is approved for 24 hours of Continuing Education Credit by the NC State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors.
