The Esthetics program provides competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles and hands-on fundamentals associated with the art of skin care. It provides a simulated salon environment that enables students to develop manipulative skills.

Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional esthetics technology, business/human relations, product knowledge and other related topics.

Graduates will be eligible to take the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts Licensing Exam. Upon passing, they may be licensed and qualify for employment in beauty and cosmetic/skin care salons, as a platform artist or in related businesses.

Step into the world of beauty, wellness and skin science with the first part of a comprehensive two‑part Esthetics program. This hands-on course prepares aspiring skincare professionals to master essential techniques in skincare, makeup application and safety practices.

Students complete an in-depth study of the skin while gaining real-world experience that builds confidence and industry-ready skills. The full program includes 600 hours of training in an approved cosmetic arts school, required to apply for the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts licensing exam.

Course Objectives

Learn all infection control procedures as mandated by North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts using Subchapter 14T

Learn about the history of esthetics and how it relates to the industry today

Demonstrate proper professional hygiene, grooming and attitude

Perform and thrive in a multicultural environment

Safely demonstrate mastery of manipulative skills and how to communicate effectively with clients

Safely and competently apply concepts of all phases of esthetics in a spa setting while practicing all safety and infection control procedures


Outline of Instruction

Orientation: Class introductions, student handbook, N.C. Board rules, Statute Scope of Practice for a Cosmetologist § 88B2, definitions, classroom rules and expectations.

Theory Concepts: Infection Control using Rule 21 NCAC Subchapter 14H, Pivot Point Lab 102.02- 102.03 - EST Fundamentals 102 Science

Teach, discuss, demonstration, student practice, evaluation: Hand washing, implementing sanitation procedure, pre- and post-sanitation procedure

Written test on student handbook, N.C. Board rules, Statute Scope of Practice for an Esthetician § 88B4, definitions, classroom rules and expectations, G.S. 88-23; 88-30.

Review: Infection control procedure using rule 21 NCAC Subchapter 14H

Theory concepts: Pivot Point Lab 102.02, First Aid-102.03

Teach, discuss and demonstrate blood exposure procedures for self and client

Teach, demonstrate and review steps of all infection controls, blood exposure procedures for self and client, hand washing, implementing sanitation procedure, pre- and post-sanitation procedure

Introduce rubrics and explain/discuss service evaluations

Written test: Infection Control Procedure using rule 21 NCAC Subchapter 14H and 102E.02-102E.03

Theory Concepts: 101 Life Skills, 102 Science, 104 Client-Centered Experience, 105 Anatomy, 106 Skin, 107 Facial Treatments, 109 Hair Removal

Practical Application: Infection control, consultation, draping, skin analysis, facials, hair removal.
Perform services on manikins and clients
