Beyond the Basics: Advanced English for Non-Native Speakers
Beyond the Basics courses help advanced, non-native-English speakers fill in the missing skills they need to communicate in English with efficiency and precision. Most students taking Beyond the Basics classes are using English every day for work or school and find that they would like to get some additional instruction and practice with a specific language skill.
Most Beyond the Basics classes meet once a week for eight weeks, and classes are usually offered in the evenings. Both online and in-person options are available.
Our pronunciation courses are taught by a certified speech language pathologist. Enrollment in pronunciation courses is limited to 10 students to ensure that every participant receives specialized attention from the instructor.
The following Beyond the Basics courses available:
- Advanced Conversation and Fluency
- Advanced Grammar
- Pronunciation Part 1
- Pronunciation Part 2
NOTE: The two parts of pronunciation classes do not indicate a level of proficiency. Students do not need to take Part 1 before taking Part 2.

Frequently asked questions
How often are classes offered?
Classes begin throughout the year and do not necessarily follow a semester schedule.
The class I would like to take isn't offered right now. Can I add my name to a notification list?
Yes. If the class you would like to take is not available, click the "Notify me when offered" button to register your email address. You will be notified as soon as a section of that class becomes available.
May I take a class more than one time?
Yes. Taking a class with a different instructor can provide a different type of practice with a different type of content. Repeating a class to further develop a particular skill is a smart idea.
Can my child take a Beyond the Basics class?
Students must be at least 16 years old on the first day of class. Students under 18 must register in person.
