Wake Tech's Industrial Automation Technician Training is perfect for individuals looking to engage with companies that use automated processes and advanced manufacturing systems. If you have a knack for mechanical and electrical components or prior experience in the field, this program can enhance your skills and propel your career forward.

Industrial automation training focuses on equipping participants with the skills needed to operate, maintain and troubleshoot various systems that facilitate automation in industrial processes. The training encompasses a range of critical topics:

  • Programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which are pivotal for controlling machinery and equipment
  • Robotics, which involves the design and use of automated machines that can perform tasks traditionally done by humans

Foundations of Automation

PLC Technician

A PLC technician specializes in the installation, maintenance and repair of programmable logic controllers, which are compact computing devices designed to automate and control an array of machinery and systems. Mechatronics Technician

Fundamentals of Electric Circuits and Motor Control

Course ID: ATR-3115C1   |   Overview

This hands-on course covers the fundamentals of electrical circuits, with a focus on industrial components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, and transformers. Students will learn to analyze circuits using Ohm’s Law, Kirchhoff’s Laws, and Power formulas. The course includes practical exercises that involve reading electrical diagrams and calculating voltage, current, resistance, and power in combination circuits. This foundation in electrical theory, AC/DC electric circuits, and advanced circuit analysis techniques will equip students with a solid understanding of electric circuit fundamentals and motor control. The course will further focus on the operation and control methods of AC motors and cover motor control devices and control transformers, control circuit diagrams and ladder logic, manual control and automatic input devices, and troubleshooting. Mechanical Drive Systems

Course ID: ATR-3115D1   |   Overview

This hands-on course offers comprehensive training in mechanical power transmission systems. Students will develop the essential skills and knowledge to install and maintain various power transmission components. Practical exercises cover safety procedures, use of precision instruments, motor and shaft alignment, bearing installation, coupling selection, and drive system setup. The course also emphasizes the importance of system monitoring, lubrication techniques, and troubleshooting.

Students will further deepen their knowledge of advanced mechanical drive systems with topics on industrial V-belt, timing belt, and heavy-duty chain drive systems, as well as coupling types and selection. Through a combination of theoretical instruction and practical application, students will be equipped with the skills necessary to succeed as Mechanical Drive Systems Technicians, Maintenance Technicians, and related fields.

Introduction to PLCs and PLC Troubleshooting

Course ID: MEC-3010M1   |   Overview

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), covering essential skills and knowledge required for PLC operation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Students will learn to start up and shut down PLC systems, identify key components, and describe basic operation principles. The course includes hands-on practice in configuring Ethernet/IP and USB serial communication networks, transferring programs between PLCs and PCs, and designing ladder logic programs. Advanced topics include PLC motor control sequences, math instructions, and comparison logic, as well as Human Machine Interface (HMI) configuration. Students will also gain experience troubleshooting PLC systems, including power distribution, processor faults, and multi-step sequence programs.
