Math for Medical Assistants and Healthcare Professionals

This course covers math concepts as applicable in healthcare occupations, including basic operations, fractions, metric system conversion, reading gauges and graphs, recording measurements, temperature conversion, skip counting, medication dosage calculations, and much more. Upon completion, students should have a stronger foundation for using math in their chosen healthcare occupation.

Course Objectives

Students will be able to:
- perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
- simplify fractions
- perform metric system conversion
- read a gauge (i.e. sphygmomanometer)
- read a scale (pounds, kilogram),
- plot and read a graph,
- read measurements using a ruler (mm, cm, inches, feet),
- convert from inches to feet/ feet to inches,
- convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius/ Celsius to Fahrenheit (temperature conversion)
- convert from pounds to kilograms/ kilograms to pounds,
- skip counting by twos, tens: (2) i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8 …. (10) i.e. 10, 20, 30
- perform household system conversion and
- calculate medication dosage
