Educators from Chile Visit Wake Tech

Four educators from Chile and two interpreters visited Wake Tech Community College today to learn about vocational/technical education at North Carolina community colleges. More than 44% of high school students in Chile are in vocational/technical programs, but many have a hard time finding jobs.

Wake Tech Community College is getting help from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to improve graduation rates. Wake Tech is one of five North Carolina community colleges who will share a $4.3 million grant award as part of a national initiative called Completion by Design. The initiative is designed to help more young people finish college with a degree, certificate or other credential.

Wayne Brower, director of Wake Tech’s Fire Services program, has been awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. The award, given by the governor’s office, is North Carolina’s highest civilian honor. It was presented to Brower today at the Wake Tech Board of Trustees meeting.
