Wake Tech Math Students Are #1 in North Carolina
RALEIGH, N.C. (December 14, 2012) - Wake Tech Community College students showcased their math skills at the third annual statewide competition of the North Carolina Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NCMATYC). Wake Tech brought home five awards, including first place overall! Fifty-eight students from six NC community colleges competed in the November 17 event at Gaston Community College.
The competition has two phases. The first phase consists of an individual calculus test; the second is a team event with ten rounds of questions at the pre-calculus level. The top scores from both phases are combined to determine which school is the statewide winner overall.
Wake Tech students took the top three spots in the first phase:
- Billy Newlin, first place
- Jacob Walsh, second place
- Diwash Thapa, third place
Four Wake Tech students placed second in the team phase of the contest:
- Joseph Caswell
- Jacob Walsh
- Abdou Ndiaye
- Alex Bessey
Wake Tech’s 12-member team earned the first place overall trophy in the state-wide competition: Ken Ackerman, Ryan Beauchemin, Alex Bessey, Joseph Caswell, Chris Celestino, Abdou Ndiaye, Billy Newlin, Derrick Sprague, Alisha Taylor, Diwash Thapa, Chris Vance and Jacob Walsh.
The North Carolina Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges was established in 1988 to improve the math-related experiences of two-year college students and instructors and to encourage local efforts to achieve excellence in mathematics education.
