RALEIGH, N.C. (December 10, 2012) - Creativity and competition are in the spotlight at Wake Tech! Pre-Engineering students from Wake Tech and Piedmont Community College faced off on Main Campus December 1 to showcase a prototype for a solar charging station for laptops and mobile devices. More than 100 students worked in teams to design a charging station powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels. Wake Tech teams took home top honors and showed off their designs to President Stephen Scott and other college leaders.

One of the prototypes will be used to potentially build a working solar charging station on Wake Tech’s Main campus. The students also submitted written technical reports of their projects.
The Solar Charging Station competition is one of thirteen projects required for Wake Tech students in the Introductory Engineering class during the semester. The students are working toward an Associate in Science: Pre-Engineering degree in anticipation of transferring to a four-year institution. The contest allows students to apply what they’ve learned about all of the engineering fields to a real-world project.
