Educators from Chile Visit Wake Tech

RALEIGH, N.C. (Tuesday, January 15, 2013) – Four educators from Chile and two interpreters visited Wake Tech Community College today to learn about vocational/technical education at North Carolina community colleges. More than 44% of high school students in Chile are in vocational/technical programs, but many have a hard time finding jobs. It is also difficult for them to transition to traditional higher education degree programs.

Wake Tech instructors and administrators provided an overview of the college’s technical programs, and highlighted its growing number of transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities. They also talked about the role local industries play in shaping Wake Tech’s curriculum, and the importance of teaching students “soft skills” to prepare them for the workforce.

The visitors toured Wake Tech’s automotive lab on Main Campus and met with students Christopher Baltazar and Phillip Kanas. Baltazar and Kanas talked about their experience in the program and goals for the future. The visit was sponsored by the International Affairs Council in Raleigh.
