Intended Audience
This course is intended for those who would like to obtain the ESL Teaching Certificate at Wake Tech Community College.
Embrace the challenges of teaching pronunciation in an adult ESL classroom. Learn why it’s important, and how to incorporate phonetic practice into other activities. Find out how to identify students' needs and learn practice activities. You will plan and present a pronunciation activity and contextualized lesson plan of your own.
Course Objectives
  1. be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of how the speech apparatus works with the goal of helping students identify and overcome English pronunciation difficulties.
  2. be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of techniques for building contextualized pronunciation practice into an ESL lesson plan as evidenced by a lesson plan assignment.
  3. be able to plan and conduct a pronunciation activity that contains a phonetic objective of their own choosing as evidenced by a presentation assignment.
Outline of Instruction
  1. Week 1: Phonology and Pronunciation Learning and Teaching; Speech Sounds
  2. Week 2: Consonants
  3. Week 3: Vowels
  4. Week 4: Phonemes in Context; The Syllable; Word Stress
  5. Week 5: Features of Connected Speech; Intonation
  6. Week 6: Pronunciation in the Classroom
  7. Week 7: Pronunciation Problem Areas
  8. Week 8: Guided Tutoring Lab - Students will provide one hour of instruction to ESL students completely supervised by the ESL instructor and the Certificate instructor.

Requirements for Successful Completion of this Course

  6. Final computed score must be 85% or higher in order to pass the class.
