Beyond the Basics

Beyond the Basics is a series of advanced English classes designed for non-native English speakers. Areas of focus include Advanced Conversation and Fluency, Pronunciation, Business Writing, and Interpersonal Skills for the Workplace (negotiating, problem solving, decision making, nonverbal communication).

Classes typically meet once per week for seven or eight weeks, and there is a small fee.  All instructors hold current credentials in the field of language instruction.

Description
Save yourself the frustration of misunderstanding and the hassle of wasted time - improve your knowledge of English grammar. This course focuses on understanding and using advanced grammatical structures in context. Students develop an understanding of their own grammatical problems and how to edit their own writing for correctness.
Course Objectives
  1. be able to demonstrate accurate aural comprehension of advanced English grammatical structures.
  2. be able to demonstrate accurate reading comprehension of advanced English grammatical structures.
  3. use advanced English grammatical structures to accurately and effectively express ideas.

  1. Review of Verb Tenses, Assessment Quiz
  2. Modals, Past Modals
  3. Conditionals, Hypothetical Statements and Questions
  4. Clauses - Adverbial, Adjective, Noun
  5. Past Perfect and Reported Speech
  6. Transition Words
  7. Prepositions, Tag Questions
  8. Review of Course Material, Student Questions, Assessment Quiz
