Intended Audience
Are you an aspiring novelists with a drawer full of abandoned manuscripts? This course is for those interested in writing novels, or working with writer’s block once a piece has been started.
Description
Many aspiring novelists have a drawer full of abandoned manuscripts – this course can help! It is designed to help students overcome being “stuck” and move forward with a novel project. They will discuss story structure and how to map the way from first chapters to last words, pacing, character arcs, and sub-plots. The course includes a one-on-one coaching session with the instructor.
Course Objectives
  1. develop a mastery of story structure and outlining
  2. explore character development and character arcs
  3. gain confidence in their writing practice
Outline of Instruction
  1. Introductions and Expectations
    Common varieties of “Stuckness” and their remedies
    The benefits of developing a writing habit
  2. Elements that pull a plot forward: Subplots, minor characters, and themes
    One-on-one coaching sessions
  3. Plot structure (outlines, charts, and maps)
    Character arcs
    Writer’s block vs. writing fatigue
  4. Pacing and timing of essential scenes
    Using dialogue and descriptive passages
    One-on-one coaching sessions
  5. Week 5 - Finishing a first draft
    What’s next? A first draft is not a final draft.
