Academic Standing FAQs

Academic Standing is a measure of a student’s academic achievement according to established college standards and (in some cases) the additional requirements of the student’s particular program of study. Academic standing determines a student’s ability to continue in a program and to qualify for graduation. Wake Tech recognizes the following levels of academic standing: Good Standing, Academic Warning, Academic Suspension, and Academic Probation.

A student’s academic standing is determined at the end of each fall and spring semester based upon previous academic standing and cumulative grade point average (GPA).

GPA Calculator

Students with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher are considered to be in Good Academic Standing.

Students will be placed on Academic Warning the first fall or spring semester their cumulative GPA is below 2.0.

Students will be placed on Academic Suspension the second consecutive fall or spring semester their cumulative GPA is below 2.0.

After a one-semester suspension, students that are reinstated will be placed on Academic Probation for the enrolled term immediately following the suspension. Students on Academic Probation must adhere to the success contract developed with their Academic Advisor. At the conclusion of the probation period, students whose cumulative GPA improves to a 2.0 or higher move to Good standing. Students whose cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 return to Academic Suspension.

Semester GPA is your grade point average for a specific semester. Cumulative GPA is your grade point average for all attempted courses at Wake Tech.

Students on Academic Warning will have a restriction placed on their record to prevent access or continued access to the registration system. Upon successful completion of College Strong, an online academic support course, the restriction will be lifted and access to the registration system will be restored.

The College Strong course is located in Blackboard.

The College Strong course is self-paced and consists of five modules. Most students will complete the entire course in two to six hours.

Upon successful completion of the College Strong course, defined as a score of 80% or higher, the restriction will be lifted from the student’s account within 2 to 3 hours to restore access to the registration system.

At the end of Fall semester, the student will have a registration hold placed on his or her account. The student must complete one of the following to have the registration hold removed:

  • Complete the Academic Success Workshop through the Tutoring and Learning
  • Center Meet with an academic advisor and develop a plan to get back on track
  • Meet with a success coach and develop a plan to get back on track

At the end of the Spring semester, the student will have a registration hold placed on his or her account. Additionally, the student will be dropped from any Summer and/or Fall courses for which they have registered. Any payments made will be refunded in full. To have the registration hold removed and to re-enroll in classes, the student must sit out for one semester and complete one of the following:

  • Complete the Academic Success Workshop through the Tutoring and Learning Center
  • Meet with an academic advisor and develop a plan to get back on track
  • Meet with a success coach and develop a plan to get back on track

The length of a suspension is one semester or term (Fall, Spring or Summer).

Yes. Students on Academic Suspension may submit a written appeal to the dean of Academic of Advising to continue their enrollment. The appeal will be considered if the student’s transcript indicates that while the cumulative GPA of 2.0 has not been achieved, significant progress has been made. Significant progress is defined as a minimum 2.0 GPA for the most current term and/or a grade of C or better in all pre-curriculum courses for the current term.
If the appeal is approved, the student must meet complete the reinstatement steps. Once completed, the registration hold will be removed, and they may re-enroll in classes. Course availability may be limited.

If the appeal is denied, the student will not be able to take any classes for one semester or term (Fall, Spring or Summer) and must follow the reinstatement process.

After a one-semester suspension, a student will be reinstated by completing one of the following:

  • Attend a success workshop sponsored by Academic Advising
  • Meet with an Academic Advisor to develop an academic plan
  • Meet with a success coach to develop a success plan

Upon completion, the hold will be lifted and access to the registration system restored. The reinstatement steps must be completed no less than one month prior to the start of the term the student wishes to be reinstated. Following reinstatement, a student will return on Academic Probation status.
