Satisfactory Academic Progress

Wake Tech requires all students to make satisfactory academic progress, defined as a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.0, based on credit hours attempted. Semester and cumulative GPAs are calculated at the end of each fall and spring semester; students who meet the GPA requirements are considered to be in good standing. Students in special academic or support programs and students receiving financial aid or veterans’ benefits must also meet any additional academic requirements for those programs. Contact Financial Aid and Veteran Services for more specific requirements. Students who do not meet the requirements for Satisfactory Academic Progress will be placed on Academic Warning, Probation, or Suspension.

Good Standing (GS): Cumulative GPA ≥ 2.0

Leads to graduation!
The Good Standing standard is awarded to students maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher.

Academic Warning (AW): Cumulative GPA < 2.0 for first time

If a student is placed on AW:

  • A Hold is placed on the student's account.
  • The student must complete College Strong course (80% accuracy) via Blackboard to have the hold removed
  • Student returns to GS if Cumulative GPA returns to ≥ 2.0.

Academic Suspension (AS): Cumulative GPA < 2.0 for second consecutive semester

If a student is placed on AS:

  • A Hold is placed on the student's account.
  • The student will be dropped from classes (refund will be issued) and required to sit out for one semester.
  • The student must attend a success workshop and meet with an Academic Advisor to complete a success contract at least 30 days prior to the first day of classes for the upcoming term.

Note:

  • Students on Academic Suspension (AS) whose Cumulative GPA is < 2.0, but term GPA is ≥ 2.0, will be allowed to remain in classes.
  • No academic hold will be placed on the student's account.
  • The student will automatically be placed on Academic Probation (AP).

Academic Probation (AP)

Students previously on Academic Suspension (AS) who have completed reinstatement requirements will be placed on Academic Probation (AP), which means:

  • No academic hold will be placed on the student's account.
  • The student will return to GS if Cumulative GPA returns to ≥ 2.0.
  • The student will return to AS if Cumulative GPA remains at < 2.0.
