Program Planning Guide

The Accounting and Finance curriculum is designed to provide students with the knowledge and the skills necessary for employment and growth in the accounting profession. Using the “language of business,” accountants assemble, analyze, process, and communicate essential information about financial operations.

In addition to coursework in accounting principles, theories, and practice, students will study business law, finance, management, and economics. Related skills are developed through the study of communications, computer applications, financial analysis, critical thinking skills, and ethics.

Graduates should qualify for entry-level accounting positions in many types of organizations including accounting firms, small businesses, manufacturing firms, banks, hospitals, school systems, and governmental agencies. With work experience and additional education, an individual may advance in the accounting profession.

About The Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions and answers about the Accounting AAS degree program.

How long does it take?

Including all required non-accounting courses (e.g. english, psychology, other electives), it will take 2 years of full-time coursework or longer if going part-time. College credits from other community colleges and accredited 4-year schools are usually accepted and you can place out of some courses.

Can I get my degree online or in the evening?

There are some accounting curriculum courses and elective courses available online through WTCC. Likewise, some courses are taught in the evening. The list changes each semester, so you'll have to look at the current course schedules to get the most up-to-date information.

What's required to enter the program?

The admissions office has more detailed information, but the main requirement is a high-school diploma.

What will I learn?

You'll be given a thorough grounding in all the basic (and many of the not-so-basic) concepts in accounting, financing and business decision making.

What can I do with the degree?

Graduates from the Wake Tech accounting program have gone on to run their own businesses, have become bookkeepers or accountants, or have continued their education at various 4-year schools.

What transfer options are available?

Credits earned in this program may be transferred toward an Associate in Applied Science degree in Accounting (provided the student meets the entrance requirements for the Accounting program) as well as either the Associate in Arts or Associate in Science for University Transfer.
