Want to take a class or two at Wake Tech? Just follow these steps:
- Complete the North Carolina Residency determination
- Apply for admission
Choose "Take College Courses as a Visiting Student - Visiting Student" as your Career Field and program of interest.
- Satisfy Course Prerequisites
– To take a course with no prerequisites, official transcripts are not required.
– To take a course that has developmental prerequisites (e.g., ENG-025 or MAT-025), upload your unofficial high school transcript to your student portal. Admissions will review your transcript to determine entry-level placement. To upload your unofficial transcript, go to Admissions and click on "Upload Transcripts."

– To take a course with college-level prerequisites (e.g., ENG-111 or MAT-172), official college transcripts and/or score reports are required. Once Wake Tech has received official transcripts and scores, staff can determine your placement and award your transfer credit. Your placement and transfer credit will determine which courses you can register for.

After you have submitted your official transcripts and test scores, submit the Visiting Student Registration Waiver form. The Visiting Student team will review the request and follow up with you.
- Activate your Wake Tech Key Account
If your North Carolina residency certification is expired or incomplete, account activation will be delayed until it is resolved. If this is the case, you will be notified via an email to the personal email provided on your application.
- Activate your Wake Tech student email account
Type in your Key Account username followed by @my.waketech.edu. Use your Key Account password for Office365.
- Sign up for New Student Orientation
Orientation is required for first-time students, but all students are encouraged to attend.
- Prepare for online classes
Students must complete the e-Learning Intro module before registering for an online course.
- Check registration dates
Visiting students are not assigned a registration priority date in Self-Service, so that information will remain blank in your portal. Keep an eye on the registration schedule to see when registration opens for visiting students.
- Select your class(es), register and pay tuition
Plan your course(s), then select "Register" and pay for classes via Self-Service. If your residency was completed some time ago, it may have expired. Check your Residency Determination Service account to ensure the residency number expiration date is after the first day of classes for your desired term.
