Former tobacco industry employees now have an added incentive to train for new careers: scholarships to pay for retraining. The N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission has presented Wake Tech Community College with $10,000 for Project Skill-Up, a vital program that assists those who have been hurt by the decline of the tobacco industry.

Dr. Stephen Scott, president of Wake Technical Community College, is proud to announce a record 1,157 students made the President’s List or Dean’s List for the Fall 2011 semester.

Biotech students from across North Carolina had the opportunity to impress industry representatives and prospective employers today at a job fair at the NC BioNetwork Capstone Center.

U.S. Senator Kay Hagan got an inside look at Wake Tech’s Simulation and Game Development program today. Hagan visited a class, viewed games developed by students and talked with successful graduates about the popular program.

Nearly $11 million to support scholarships, new technology, and faculty and staff innovation – that’s what Wake Tech’s major gifts campaign, called “The Ripple Effect,” has generated since its launch last year. The campaign is a response to record-breaking enrollment at the college and unprecedented demand for its education and training programs.

Students in a nutrition class at Wake Tech Community College had a special "virtual" visit today: The "Meal Makeover Moms," nationally-known dietitians Janice Bissex and Liz Weiss, visited the class via Skype to talk with students about healthier eating.

Wake Tech Community College hosted its first December commencement exercises today. The ceremony, held for the first time on college grounds, took place in the new gymnasium on Main Campus. More than 360 students received degrees and diplomas. About 120 graduates and their families attended the ceremony.

Industry leaders in biotechnology and life sciences gathered at the BioNetwork Capstone Center today to offer expert advice on specialized workforce training. The annual advisors' meeting brought educators together with the experts to discuss skill sets needed in the workforce and solicit feedback on current and future training needs.

The "glass" walls are made of sugar; the green boughs of the Christmas tree are made of royal icing. These are some of the features of the intricate gingerbread houses created by students and instructors in the Baking and Pastry Arts program at Wake Technical Community College.
