Wake Tech Baking Students Build Houses for Charity

RALEIGH, N.C. (December 1, 2011) - The "glass" walls are made of sugar; the green boughs of the Christmas tree are made of royal icing. These are some of the features of the intricate gingerbread houses created by students and instructors in the Baking and Pastry Arts program at Wake Technical Community College. Three instructors and four students put their skills to good use, volunteering their time to build three gingerbread houses for Triangle Family Services. Triangle Family Services is a local non-profit that helps families in need. The organization will auction off the special creations at its annual Gingerbread House Gala being held tonight at the Umstead Hotel in Cary.

Wake Tech's three gingerbread houses have festive holiday themes:

  • "Santa's Culinary School," by instructors Caralyn House, Kelly Bellmore and Norma Miller
  • "An English Manor," by students JoAnn Rey, Rachel Smith and Sue Chaploney
  • "Santa's Animal Rescue," by student Karen Gray

The unique holiday structures are made of gingerbread, sugar and fondant, and the decorations are candies of all kinds. In Santa's Culinary School, instructors used gum paste to mold miniature figures in their own likeness!

Supporting the Triangle Family Services Gingerbread House Gala has become an annual tradition for the Wake Tech Baking and Pastry Arts program. In the past, a single Wake Tech entry brought in $600 to benefit local families in need.
