Apprenticeships offer opportunities for students to earn while they learn and get a leg up on employment and workplace success while gaining relevant skills and developing lasting connections. An apprenticeship combines classroom instruction with on-the-job training to build and develop a skilled workforce.

Apprentices take college classes at Wake Tech while working with a mentor on the job to learn a checklist of skills applicable to their job. Students actively taking classes at Wake Tech may be eligible to apply for apprenticeship positions with participating partners in their related fields.

NOTE: An apprenticeship is not guaranteed, as employers conduct competitive interviews and the availability of positions is determined by employer needs.

Thanks to funding provided by Wake County, the cost of tuition, fees, books and some uniforms and/or tools is covered for students accepted into a Wake Tech Apprenticeship program.

Although eligibility requirements for an apprenticeship vary by occupation, the minimum requirements are as follows:

  • 18 years old
  • Completed high school or equivalent
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Have a Social Security number

Professional certifications

A high school transcript or high school equivalency documentation is required.

Wake Tech Apprenticeship uses curriculum from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER). NCCER is recognized by the construction industry as the training, assessment, certification and career development standard for the construction and maintenance craft professional. NCCER certification is nationally recognized and shows that the certificate holder is highly trained, knowledgeable and qualified to do the job anywhere in the country.

  • Electrical: Strong emphasis is placed on safe work practices, while covering applied electrical theory and residential, commercial and industrial electrical knowledge and skills.
  • HVAC: Covers the concepts technicians need to safely install, maintain and troubleshoot HVACR systems. Also covers needed basic knowledge of sheet metal, welding and pipefitting.

Wake Tech Apprenticeship will sponsor up to 20 students each year. Applications will be accepted starting May 1, and the application will remain open until the maximum number of students has been reached.
