Degrees & Pathways
AAS - Associate in Applied Science

The Radiography program is a 21-month program offering an Associate in Applied Science degree. The program prepares the student for a career as a radiographer, a skilled health care professional who uses radiation to produce images of the human body.

Graduates are eligible to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists' national examination for certification and registration as medical radiographers. Employment opportunities include hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, medical laboratories, government agencies and industry.

The Radiography curriculum includes clinical rotations to area health care facilities and covers the following topics:

  • Radiographic procedures
  • Radiographic imaging and physics
  • Radiation protection
  • Radiobiology
  • Pathology
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Patient care and management
  • Image analysis

Radiography students will be placed at clinical sites such as WakeMed (Raleigh, north Raleigh and Cary campuses), Duke Health Raleigh and UNC Rex Healthcare, where they will work with hospital staff as well as Wake Tech faculty. They will complete a limited number of night and weekend rotations and a limited rotation in an office setting.

The Radiography program is offered at Wake Tech's Perry Health Sciences Campus, adjacent to WakeMed's flagship hospital in Raleigh. The program begins each Fall and Spring semester.

Professional licensure

Wake Tech academic programs (credit and non-credit) that are designed to lead to professional licenses are tied to North Carolina or national certifications. If you intend to pursue professional licenses outside North Carolina once you have completed your academic program at Wake Tech, please refer to the Professional Licensure section of the college's distance education authorization page for additional information.

Many employers require their technologists to hold certification and registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Certification as a radiologic technologist requires that a graduate pass an examination sponsored by ARRT. All candidates for certification must comply with the rules of ethics contained in the ARRT Standards of Ethics, which are intended to promote the protection, safety and comfort of patients.

Registered technologists and candidates who engage in or permit others to engage in any of the conduct prohibited by the rules are subject to sanctions. Conviction of any crime – misdemeanor or felony, with the exception of speeding and parking violations – constitutes a violation of the rules. "Conviction," as used here, includes guilty or no contest pleas, entry in a pre-trial diversion program or guilty verdicts in which the adjudication is either withheld, deferred or not entered or the sentence is suspended or stayed.

Radiography program applicants may find out about their eligibility for testing before enrolling in class by downloading a pre-application packet from ARRT or calling ARRT at 651-687-0048, extension 8580, to request a copy.

Accreditation

Wake Tech's Radiology program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and is operated in compliance with its standards for accredited radiography programs.

Following an on-site visit in April 2018, the program was accredited for eight years.

General program accreditation information and the current accreditation award letter can be found on JRCERT's website.
