Wake Tech is partnering with Wake County Public School System and local employers to expand opportunities for high school juniors through the WakeWorks® Youth Apprenticeship Academy. The program scales WakeWorks® pre-apprenticeship efforts and provides direct support for students and employers. Over three years, the academy will serve 250 students as they prepare for high-demand, high-wage careers in the skilled trades.
Students participate in structured work-based learning designed to build skills, connect classroom learning to real-world experience and create pathways to strong careers and greater economic mobility. Each of these programs has diploma and degree pathways, as well as industry certifications:
- Construction and Skilled Trades (carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and welding)
Leading to NCCER, AWS, Construction Craft Labor and/or OSHA certifications
- Transportation Technology
Leading to ASE certifications
- Mechanical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing
Leading to MSSC or SACA Certified Production Technician credentials and FANUC Robotics certifications
Students receive support for books, supplies and transportation, along with a monthly participation stipend during the first year. The Career & College Promise program helps cover tuition, and students are connected with Wake Tech's wraparound support services to help them stay on track for completion.
In the second year, students work with employer partners as paid Registered Youth Apprentices, gaining hands-on experience and industry-relevant skills. After high school graduation, participants may choose to continue their apprenticeship or move directly into the workforce.
