Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are online courses open to anyone in the world, free of charge. Anyone with a computer and internet access can take a MOOC, but students receive no college credit for completing a Wake Tech MOOC.

Wake Tech has a long history of delivering high-quality education online, becoming the first community college in North Carolina and one of the first in the nation to offer a MOOC in 2013.

Following are the MOOCs currently offered at Wake Tech:

  • College Strong
College Strong is college preparation and success MOOC. The self-paced course offers opportunities for students to actively explore the scholastic, personal and economic expectations of a college student that leads to earning a certificate, diploma or degree. The course explores college expectations; career, major and college choices; time and financial commitments; and resources and strategies for succeeding in college.

  • CheMOOC
The Chemistry MOOC provides a review of the basics necessary for success in entry-level college science courses. It is divided into 11 sections: Introduction to Science, Chemistry and Measurement; Matter and Energy; Atomic History and Structure; Molecular Compounds; Ionic Compounds; Chemical Equations and Describing Reactions; Stoichiometry; Aqueous Solutions; Acids and Bases; Gases; and Basic Organic Chemistry, Functional Groups and Intermolecular Forces.
The MOOC offers students a route to review foundations of chemistry or to satisfy the CHM-090 prerequisite at Wake Tech through a proctored challenge exam available upon completion of the MOOC.
