Intended Audience
Unemployed, underemployed or full-time person facing a pending layoff or termination of employment and/or needing hands-on assistance creating a resume.
A successful resume is one that appeals to potential employers and results in interviews. This is accomplished by matching your qualifications, skills, and experience to the needs of employers. Research and analyze job postings to help you choose key words and phrases that resonate with potential employers. Learn to write concise accomplishment statements that showcase your ability to perform the required duties. Apply ATS-compatible formatting that will increase the likeliness of your resume advancing to the hiring manager when applying online. Write your targeted resume in this practical, hands-on course in a computer lab with the instructor circulating for individual consultation.

  1. Review basic resume writing guidelines and how they impact resume effectiveness.
  2. Explore occupation research resources to develop a comprehensive understanding of the targeted position and relevant job titles.
  3. Search and analyze job postings for targeted position to identify key words and phrases, prioritize job duties, and determine personal matching qualifications, skills, and experience.
  4. Write a compelling summary that incorporates key words and phrases.
  5. Craft accomplishment statements that address critical job duties of targeted position.
  6. Develop remaining resume sections that include education, special skills, and other relevant information.
  7. Apply formatting that is compatible with Applicant Tracking Systems.
