RALEIGH, N.C. (October 10, 2018) - Students in Wake Tech’s culinary programs are celebrating success after winning 30 medals out of 39 entries at the NC American Culinary Federation (ACF) Competition at the Scott Northern Wake Campus! They competed in several categories, including cakes and special showpieces. Ashely Vann won “Best in Show” for “Autumn,” her seasonal chocolate showpiece inspired by wildlife.
Wake Tech students showed off some impressive skills: nine entries won gold medals, 7 entries received silver medals, and 14 earned bronze. The entries were judged on artistry, craftsmanship, theme, and presentation and were awarded points using the official ACF scale.
“The students did some really creative work for the competition,” said Chef Caralyn House, Baking and Pastry Arts Associate Department Head. “The judges were very impressed!”
Students from Stratford University in Virginia also competed.
The event is an opportunity to highlight the talents of culinary students. It is also a final project for students in Wake Tech’s associate degree programs in Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts. They receive valuable, one-on-one critiques from the professionals who judge the competition.
With the recent closures of culinary training institutions in the area, more students are turning to Wake Tech to continue to pursue their academic and career goals in the college’s world-class Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts programs.
