Associate in Fine Arts Degree

Wake Tech Course ID: A10600

The two-year Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degree program prepares students to pursue further education, such as a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, or to enter professional practice. The AFA curriculum focuses on developing students' technical skills, visual observation and material problem solving.

AFA students take five required classes in studio art and art history:

  • ART-114: Art History Survey I
  • ART-115: Art History Survey II
  • ART-121: 2D Design
  • ART-122: 3D Design
  • ART-131: Drawing I

AFA students also are encouraged to take additional art electives, such as focused classes in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, digital art, digital photography or non-Western art history.

Taking studio classes each semester permits a consistent development of technical and artistic skills and contributes to a diverse portfolio, often required for successful transfer.

The program offers additional opportunities for student engagement, such as the AFA Emerging Artist Exhibition, on-campus exhibits, events, workshops and artist talks through the Visual Art Student Engagement Center (VASE).
