Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

The non-degree Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) program introduces basic emergency medical care to prepare students for basic life-saving skills and to administer many emergency medications.

The goal of the program is to prepare Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.

Through interactive presentations, skills labs and simulations, students build the knowledge and skills to care for patients and become prepared to perform in the prehospital world. Topics include preparatory, airway, patient assessment, medical emergencies, trauma, infants and children, and operations.

The five-month program starts in August and January and consists of a combination of in-persona and online classes.

Students also must complete 108 hours of observation under the supervision of a preceptor at an affiliated EMS agency. This may be completed starting midway through the program, provided they have completed all the course medical requirements. The field experience must be completed three days before the Technical Scope of Practice evaluation. The available shifts include day, evening and weekends, separate from the classroom hours.

Upon completion of the program, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve North Carolina State or National Registry EMT certification.
