Wake Tech is closed December 24 through January 4 for winter break and will reopen January 5. Prospective students can still apply for enrollment online during the break, and continuing students can register for Spring semester classes, which start January 7.
Students in the Welding Technology program must demonstrate the following abilities or meet the following standards:
Reach, manipulate and operate equipment necessary for laboratory work
No debilitating fear of small spaces or heights
Make accurate measurements with test equipment and/or measuring instruments
Repair and/or replace defective components
Communicate with others to accurately gather information relevant to defects in equipment, components and/or products, as well as locations
Interpret and work from blueprints and understand welding symbols correctly
Climb ladders up to 35 feet in length while carrying tools and equipment
Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds and install equipment overhead
Understand orders, instructions and descriptions and read and comprehend technical manuals
Wear hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes and other safety-related equipment as required by the industry
No fear of fire or welding sparks
Work with hands
No fear of getting clothes or hands dirty
Locate, interpret and apply the rules of the American Welding Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineering welding codes
Identify welding electrodes, filler wire and supplies by welding code
The welding trade is one with many inherent risks, and safety of the employee (student) is of the utmost concern and cannot and should not be compromised just because an individual wants to go into the trade.
