The goal of Wake Tech's Respiratory Therapy program is to prepare graduates with demonstrated competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills) and affective (behavior) learning domains of respiratory care practice as performed by registered respiratory therapists.
To achieve this, the program will meet the following objectives:
Cognitive/knowledge
Deliver a comprehensive curriculum integrating fundamental respiratory care concepts and emerging technologies
Use evidence-based practice and critical thinking to enhance clinical decision-making skills
Ensure proficiency in interpreting and analyzing patient data, including arterial blood gases and pulmonary function tests
Psychomotor/skills
Provide hands-on training in mechanical ventilation, airway management and life support techniques
Partner with accredited clinical sites for supervised real-world patient care experiences
Conduct competency evaluations to ensure proficiency in respiratory therapy procedures and equipment use
Affective/behavior
Foster professional behavior, ethical responsibility and patient-centered care principles
Promote lifelong learning and professional development through continuing education and credentialing
Encourage participation in professional organizations and engagement in leadership and advocacy roles
The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredits respiratory therapy education programs in the U.S. using an outcomes-based process. Programmatic outcomes are performance indicators that reflect the extent to which the educational goals of the program are achieved and by which program effectiveness is documented.
