College Launches Teacher Prep University Transfer Degrees

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 10, 2021) –  Students who want to make a difference in the lives of others and become a licensed teacher can now start their career path at Wake Tech.

This fall, Wake Tech is launching two new university transfer degrees – Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation and Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation. These degrees allow aspiring teachers to complete their first two years of general college education at Wake Tech, transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree in education, and then become licensed elementary, middle and high school educators.

The Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation is designed for those who want to teach in the humanities or social sciences and the Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation is tailored for those with an interest in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math.

Both teacher prep degrees are comprised of 60 credit hours of college transfer courses allowing students who meet requirements the opportunity to transfer as a junior to 15 University of North Carolina System institutions and a number of North Carolina private colleges and universities.

In addition to 45 credit hours of general education courses, teacher prep degree students will also complete a social diversity course as well as the following four teacher education courses: Teaching and Learning for All, Foundations of Education, Literacy Development and Instruction, and Teacher Licensure Preparation.

Catherine Lassiter, Dean of Business and Public Services Technologies at Wake Tech, said the new teacher prep degree programs are intended to help fuel the pipeline of teachers in North Carolina.

“North Carolina has long experienced a teacher shortage, and these degree programs allow community colleges to join the effort of training qualified teachers in our state,” she said. “By starting at Wake Tech, aspiring teachers can explore a rewarding teaching career through a more affordable option and live closer to home.”

With the addition of the two teacher prep transfer degrees, Wake Tech now offers a total of six university transfer degrees.

Wake Tech also offers early childhood education programs which prepare individuals to work with children from birth to kindergarten. Learn more about Wake Tech’s education programs at education.waketech.edu.
