Short-Term Training Scholarship Programs Begin

WakeWorks Propel Assists Wake County Residents with Job Transition

RALEIGH, N.C. (February 1, 2021) - Wake Tech’s new low-cost, fast-paced career training initiative is moving full speed ahead. Accelerated  non-degree programs provided by WakeWorks Propel began this month. Many are in high-demand healthcare and IT career fields and can be completed in three to six months.

The courses that have started include Healthcare Billing and Coding, Central Sterile Processing Technician, BioWork: Process Technician, IT Support Technician, Network Technician, Software Developer Using Python, and Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician.

Thanks to the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) scholarship program, these courses are being offered at little to no cost to students who qualify..

Several other training programs in high-demand fields will begin over the next few weeks, including Carpentry, Web Programmer Using HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, Web Programmer Using Python and Django, and Certified Forklift Technician.

So far, more than 400 people have applied to WakeWorks Propel, which is designed to help “propel” individuals into a new job, an apprenticeship program or even a Wake Tech degree program. Propel offers scholarship awards of up to $750, which can be used to cover tuition, fees, books, and tools.

“This program is an amazing opportunity for qualified students,” said Anthony Caison, Wake Tech Vice President of Workforce Continuing Education. “It’s an opportunity for them to obtain in-demand workplace skills and credentials to get back into the job market quickly, and at very little cost, if any.”

WakeWorks Propel is made possible through the support of a number of partners including the North Carolina Community College System,  the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief (GEER) scholarship program, and the Capital Area Workforce Development Board. Capital Area NCWorks Career Centers helps refer potential students to WakeWorks Propel and assists with job placement upon completion of a program. Wake Tech career coaches also assist students with program guidance and employment planning.
