Migrant Farm Workers Who Want to Earn a High School Diploma Receive Laptops

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 13, 2020) - Wake Tech is making it easier for migrant farm workers to earn a high school diploma. The college handed out refurbished laptops to 45 students in the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) to help them accomplish their goal.

The federally-funded program provides migrant and seasonal farmworkers the training necessary to obtain a high school equivalency credential. Wake Tech purchased the re-purposed laptops from a non-profit based in California, as well as supplies including headsets, keyboards, and backpacks. If the students complete the program, they get to keep the equipment.

“HEP is such a unique program and makes us uniquely Wake Tech,” said Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Ralls. “We’re providing educational opportunities for seasonal workers across North Carolina.”

Wake Tech offers the only High School Equivalency Program in the state. It is run through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Wake Tech has been participating in the program since 2001.
