RALEIGH, N.C. (February 27, 2020) - Students in Wake Tech’s culinary programs are celebrating success after winning 21 medals at the NC American Culinary Federation (ACF) Competition at the Scott Northern Wake Campus.
The competition included several categories, including buffet platters, cakes, and special showpieces. Student Anna Kim won “Best in Show” for her elegant wedding cake "My Love for You Blossoms Every Day."
Kim and other Wake Tech students showed off some impressive skills: 8 entries won gold medals, 7 entries received silver medals, and 6 earned bronze. All the entries were judged on artistry, craftsmanship, theme, and presentation and were awarded points using the official ACF scale.
“The ACF Competition is always an exciting event,” said Chef Caralyn House, Professor/Program Director for Baking & Pastry Arts at “Wake Tech. “I am so proud of our students and the beautiful artwork they've created out of completely edible materials.”
Student Najmeh Pashmi, who won gold for her special showpiece, said support from her instructors and classmates led to her success.
“I did it and my name is on there, but my instructors helped me a lot and supported me and all my classmates too,” she said. “I’m grateful to be here at Wake Tech.”
A professional chef and a student from Myrtle Beach also competed and each took home a medal.
The ACF competition is held each semester to highlight the talents of culinary students as well as skilled professionals. It is also a final project for students in Wake Tech’s associate degree programs in Culinary Arts and Baking & Pastry Arts. They receive valuable, one-on-one critiques from the professionals who judge the competition.
The Baking and Pastry Arts program prepare students for quick entry into the industry in a variety of positions including baking/pastry assistant, area pastry chef, and assistant pastry chef, among others. With experience, graduates can advance from entry-level positions to pastry chef, cake designer, or bakery manager.
