RALEIGH, N.C. (October 18, 2018) - Wake Tech hosted two special food drives this week to help students in need. “Feed-A-Friend” Food Truck Rodeos took place Tuesday on Southern Wake Campus and Thursday on the Scott Northern Wake Campus.
Students, faculty, and staff donated food items and enjoyed lunch from one of several food trucks. The food donations will benefit “The Nest,” Wake Tech’s food pantry, which is located on three campuses and the Beltline Education Center.
“41 percent of our students experience some type of food insecurity,” says Mariel Klem, Wake Tech Student Advocacy and Support Coordinator. “They're running out of food before the end of the week and skipping meals. It's hard to pay attention in class if you’re hungry.”
Wake Tech is competing with 18 other colleges in North Carolina to collect the most pounds of food at a single event. The school with the greatest amount of food wins $10,000 from Food Lion.
Volunteers at the donation drive on Southern Wake Campus also packed a truck full of yams that will be distributed to The Nest and Wake County residents.
The first Wake Tech food pantry opened in 2014 on the Southern Wake Campus. The program was expanded to the Perry Health Sciences Campus, Scott Northern Wake Campus, and Beltline Education Center. To date, the pantries have provided more than 1,600 students with much-needed food. Wake Tech students, employees, clubs, and organizations contribute through food drives and the pantry’s “Sponsor a Shelf” program.
