Renowned Futurist Featured at SunTrust Center For Strategic Futures

RALEIGH, N.C. (September 22, 2010) - Why study the future? Renowned futurist Marvin Cetron believes it's the key to survival in the 21st century. Cetron presented his ideas today at the SunTrust Center for Strategic Futures. More than 600 students, staff, faculty and members of the community came to hear Dr. Cetron speak at Wake Tech's Main Campus. Cetron told them that it's important to address issues like climate change, a global food crisis, and overpopulation. "Studying the future," Dr. Cetron said, "enables us to meet the challenges ahead."

Cetron is the founder of Forecasting International in Falls Church, Virginia. As one of the world's leading futurists, he has been a consultant to the White House as well as to Fortune 500 companies and academic institutions. He has authored numerous books and has appeared regularly on network tv.

Among Cetron's predictions for the future: today's college students will have 4 to 5 jobs over their lifetime and will work until they're 75 years old on average. Since most will change jobs several times, he says lifelong learning is vital to help them stay competitive. He also encourages students to consider STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). "A focus on STEM programs is crucial, and we (Americans) aren't cutting the mustard," he said.

Dr. Cetron also predicts that despite signs that the economy is recovering, there won't be enough jobs for Americans for another four years. "People are working longer these days. They're also being replaced by machines that can do jobs more efficiently," he said. Cetron also said that small businesses will continue to play a key role in creating jobs.

The SunTrust Center for Strategic Futures was established to facilitate the exchange of ideas and spark collaborative action. The goal is to convene local business, government, and educational leaders to address economic trends, to help students better prepare for careers of the future.
