Wake Tech Welcomes U.S. Representative Renee Ellmers
RALEIGH, N.C. (September 30, 2011) - U.S. Representative Renee Ellmers visited Wake Tech's Main Campus today to get a first-hand look at the college's technical programs, including Automotive Systems Technology, Biopharmaceutical Technology, and Culinary Arts.
In the automotive lab, Rep. Ellmers looked on as instructor Rich Cregar and a group of second-year students worked on the battery of a state-owned Toyota Prius hybrid. Wake Tech is currently developing the very first "Green" Automotive Technologies program in North Carolina. The program will focus on the maintenance and repair of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles, and is being made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.
"We wanted to showcase these programs during Representative Ellmers' visit," says Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott, "and demonstrate the important role that federal funding plays in our development of educational programs for newly emerging careers." Over the past five years, the college has received federal funds to create or expand programs in computer simulation, criminal justice, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
"The way you run this community college is a great model to follow in Washington," says Ellmers. "Efficiency is what it's about - you take in information about where you need to be going, and then utilize your resources to provide it."
Ellmers also toured the Culinary Arts lab and enjoyed lunch prepared by students in the program.
