Wake Tech Wins Award For "Green" Building

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 27, 2011) - Wake Technical Community College is the recipient of a 2011 Triangle Business Journal Green Award. The award recognizes Building D on Wake Tech's Northern Wake Tech Campus on Louisburg Road (US 401 N) in Raleigh. Building D is the third instructional building on the environmentally-friendly campus, and is certified LEED Gold by the U. S. Green Building Council, one of only a dozen such buildings in Wake County. It won the award in the Green Commercial New Construction Project category.

"We're honored to receive this award," says Dr. Gayle Greene, Vice President of the Northern Wake Campus. "Wake Tech's Northern Wake Campus has been innovative since it began and now serves as a model for other projects across the region."

Wake Tech's Northern Wake Campus is the first all-LEED college campus in the country. Building D is the third instructional building on the growing campus. With nearly 75,000 square feet of space, Building D includes classrooms, computer and science labs, high tech distance education facilities, and a coffee shop. These spaces are infused with outside light, and the building's design automatically adjusts interior lighting accordingly. A white roof reflects sunlight and helps keep HVAC costs down, as do sun-blocking louvers on the building's southern exposure. Like all the buildings on campus, Building D uses highly energy efficient condensing boilers, fans, and pump motors. Restrooms have faucets with automatic sensors and low-flush toilets to conserve water. The energy-efficient features reduce electricity use by more than 30% and cut water use almost in half.

The Green Awards are given to individuals, businesses, and organizations in the Triangle who have incorporated environmentally sustainable practices in their operations and communities. They were presented at a luncheon and expo at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary.
