Wake Tech Awards STEM Scholarships

RALEIGH, N.C. (December 2, 2011) - Wake Tech Community College has awarded National Science Foundation scholarships to 39 students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs for the 2011-12 year.

The awards, totaling $168,533, are part of NSF's GREAT (Graduation, Retention, and Expansion of AAS Technicians) Scholarship Project, which offers financial support for high school graduates interested in STEM fields. The scholarships target students pursuing an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in one of six programs: Environmental Science Technology, Biopharmaceutical Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology and Computer Engineering Technology.

Funds cover tuition, books, student fees, and living expenses; internships and co-op opportunities are also available.

"We're always thrilled to see students excited about studying the STEM disciplines and looking toward careers in these high-demand fields", says Ginger Pasley, environmental science instructor at Wake Tech. "The GREAT scholarships offer tremendous incentive - and tremendous support. They're helping to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow."

The GREAT Scholarship Project is open to any high school graduate or graduating high school student with a GPA of at least 2.8. Applications for 2012-2013 scholarships will be accepted through April 30, 2012.

Graduates in the six AAS degree programs will have the skills for immediate employment - or the option of furthering their education by transferring to a four-year college or university. The degrees transfer to at least one of a variety of regional institutions, including East Carolina University, Campbell University, Mount Olive College, NC Central University and NC Wesleyan College. Some of these schools offer bachelor's degree programs that can be completed online.
