Wake Tech Strengthens Commitment to Sustainability
RALEIGH, N.C. (July 19, 2012) - Wake Technical Community College is pleased to announce that it has renewed its membership in the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). AASHE supports sustainability by providing institutions with resources, professional development, and a peer support network. Wake Tech’s membership brings support for college sustainability initiatives, extending to individual students, faculty, and staff as well as to broader college initiatives in the larger community.
“Membership in AASHE is important to Wake Tech,” says President Stephen C. Scott. “This forward-thinking group offers a wealth of knowledge about sustainability and how to make it part of our every action – as well as our planning for the future. Their support will help us keep these critical issues in our sights at all times.”
“We are delighted to have Wake Tech on board and participating in the campus sustainability community,” said Paul Rowland, executive director of AASHE. “This shows a real commitment to playing a leadership role in some of the biggest challenges of our time. We’re glad to be able to provide the Wake Tech community with access to best practices in campus sustainability.”
AASHE hosts the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS), which enables institutions to measure progress and learn from others. STARS allows institutions to choose appropriate pathways to sustainability while conserving valuable resources, combating global warming, and building healthier communities. AASHE also offers extensive online resources and discussion forums for professional development.
AASHE is one of two supporting organizations for the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), which includes more than 670 college presidents and chancellors who have committed their institutions to climate neutrality. Wake Tech signed the ACUPCC and submitted its first Greenhouse Gas Inventory in 2010. This year, on Earth Day, the college submitted its first Climate Action Plan. The plan answers the call to combat climate change by addressing greenhouse gas emissions on campus, introducing students to sustainability practices, and outlining strategies for a sustainable future.
