Wake Tech’s Fall Enrollment Tops 20,000 For First Time Ever

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 15, 2012) - A record 20,216 students descended on Wake Tech’s five campuses today as the 2012-13 academic year begins. It’s the first time fall enrollment has hit the 20,000 mark in college history. Student enrollment at Wake Tech has increased more than 55% over the past five years. Wake Tech is now the largest community college in North Carolina, based on annual budget full-time equivalent enrollment.

The college continues to expand to keep up with the education and training demands of the region, with two new instructional buildings opening this fall. An 80,000-square-foot building on Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus houses classrooms, computer labs, and a 293-seat hall for lectures, classes, concerts and other events, and a 98,000-square-foot building on its Health Sciences Campus will allow the college to provide training for more nurses, X-ray technicians, and MRI/CT technicians. That building is due to open for classes later this fall.

Wake Tech’s enrollment is expected to grow by 50% over the next five years. Each semester, more than 6,000 students are on waiting lists for classes that are full. This fall, voters are being asked to support a $200 million bond referendum to pay for new facilities and renovations that will enable Wake Tech to serve an additional 24,000 students.

The funds will be used for the following projects:

  • Three new instructional buildings on the Northern Wake Campus
  • Expansion of the Public Safety Education Campus
  • Renovations and repairs on Main Campus
  • The first three buildings on the new RTP Campus in Morrisville

The bonds will not result in a tax increase.
