Wake Tech Welcomes New Trustees
RALEIGH, N.C. (August 20, 2013) - The Board of Trustees of Wake Technical Community College is pleased to welcome two new members to its ranks. David Robinson, appointed by Governor Pat McCrory, and Phil Zachary, appointed by the Wake County Board of Commissioners, were sworn in Tuesday, August 20, as the newest trustees on Wake Tech’s 12-member board.
Robinson is Special Counsel with the Employment and Labor Law Group of Nexsen Pruet, one of the larger law firms in the Carolinas. His practice is focused in the areas of international, corporate, employment, immigration, and commercial law. Robinson grew up in Japan, has traveled to more than 40 countries, and serves as a lecturer and consultant on business start-up issues, international immigration, trade and finance, and corporate compliance and organization. He has been volunteering with the Wake Tech Small Business Center for almost two decades, is a fellow of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Healthy Community Institute, and is an active volunteer with the American Red Cross and other international non-profits. Robinson holds a bachelor’s degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a Juris Doctor with an international law concentration from George Washington National Law Center. David and his wife Sue have three children, and live in Raleigh.
Zachary is the President and Chief Operating Officer of Curtis Media Group and a 30-year industry veteran. He manages the company’s radio stations, networks, digital and interactive divisions, and print publications. Before joining Curtis in 2002, Zachary was Vice President/Market Manager for CBS Radio in Washington, DC. He is chairman of the board for The Greater Raleigh Convention and Visitors Bureau, serves on the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Board of Advisors, and is a member of The 200 Club of Wake County Board of Trustees. Zachary was named the radio industry’s “Market Manager of the Year” in 2004. He has a bachelor’s degree from The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. He and his wife Dawn live in Raleigh.
“Wake Tech is indeed fortunate to have Mr. Robinson and Mr. Zachary join our board,” says Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen C. Scott. “The experience and expertise they bring in business, marketing, and legal matters will be invaluable in guiding Wake Tech in the months and years ahead.”
Robinson and Zachary replace Benjamin Reese and Wanda Denning, who were recognized for their years of service at the board’s August meeting. Current Trustee Linda Coleman was sworn in for another four-year term.
Wake Tech is served by 12 trustees, all of whom are appointed: four by the governor, four by the Wake County Board of Commissioners, and four by the Wake County Board of Education. An ex-officio student representative (usually the president of Wake Tech’s Student Government Association) also serves on the board. Trustees establish policy for Wake Tech, approve the annual budget, and serve as advocates for the college and its services. Trustees also select the college president when that need arises.
