Wake Tech Culinary Students Travel to France
RALEIGH, N.C. (September 30, 2013) - Wake Tech culinary students leave Wednesday, October 2 for an 18-day educational experience of a lifetime! Six students and their instructor will head to Le Touquet, France, to study French cuisine at a culinary school and to learn the ropes in French restaurants. The students will study at Lycee d'Etat Hotelier du Touquet, attend seminars and tastings, and gain first-hand experience working alongside chefs at area hotels. They will also dine with a French chef at his Michelin-rated restaurant, tour the Champagne region, and enjoy a weekend in Paris before returning on October 20.
Wake Tech has had a successful association with the Lycee d'Etat Hotelier du Touquet for two decades, and culinary students have made an annual trip there since 2008. Students from the French culinary school also travel here each year, to observe culinary instruction at Wake Tech and to work in hotels and restaurants in the Raleigh area.
Students making the trip include Mary Marshall and Megan Peters from Raleigh, Michael Anderson from Morrisville, Sarah Kwiatkowski and Mary Moyer from Cary, and Marisa Benton from Fuquay-Varina. They are in Wake Tech’s Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, and Hospitality Management programs. Department Head Jeff Hadley is leading the group.
“The French exchange program has so many benefits for our students from a professional and cultural perspective,” Hadley says. “Even though a different language is spoken there, the students learn our industry has a universal language all its own.”
The students are required to journal during the trip and make presentations when they return. They raised funds for their trip by making and selling homemade sausage. The Fuquay-Varina Chamber of Commerce also made a $600 donation to help support the trip.
