Northern Wake Campus Expands

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 15, 2014) - Wake Tech broke ground today on the first of four new instructional buildings at the Northern Wake Campus. Due to the threat of rain, the ceremony took place indoors, complete with shovels and sand! Elected officials, business leaders and educators participated in the ceremony to mark the start of projects that will be constructed with funds from Wake County’s 2012 bond referendum, which passed by an overwhelming 73%. The projects include Building F, an 782-space parking deck, a regional energy plant, and two pedestrian bridges, which will be completed in 2015.

Building F will have more than 87,000 square feet of space for a library and learning commons, classrooms, a tutoring center, and disability support services. The regional plant will include a classroom for teaching applied technologies (skilled trades) such as construction management, welding, and heating and air conditioning. Those programs have previously been offered solely on Wake Tech’s Main Campus.

The Northern Wake Campus opened in 2007 on 127 acres along Louisburg Road, just north of I-540. Since it opened, enrollment has more than doubled, from 6,491 students the first year to 13,155 last year. Other bond-funded projects will include three more instructional buildings which will open in 2016. The expansion will enable the college to serve an additional 4,000 students.

“These projects will allow us to serve more students as demand for our services continues to grow,” said Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott. “Wake Tech offers the skills and credentials people need to compete in the job market, re-direct their careers, and to take their place among those who lead the way.”

The Northern Wake Campus is the first campus in the nation to have all buildings LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. Dr. Scott has mandated that all new buildings be certified LEED Silver or better. You can watch the entire event here.
