Wake County’s One Millionth Resident to Receive Wake Tech Scholarship

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 22, 2014)- When Anderson Grace Hughes finishes high school in 18 years, she won’t have to worry about paying for the first two years of college! Dr. Stephen Scott, President of Wake Technical Community College, announced today that the college Foundation will provide a full scholarship for Anderson, born today at WakeMed, and just identified as Wake County’s one millionth resident. The scholarship will cover two years of tuition at Wake Tech at the going rate in the year 2032. The current tuition is $1,152 per semester.

“While we can’t see the future, we can rest assured that education will remain a critical factor in future success,” said Dr. Scott. “We want Anderson to be able to take full advantage of what we offer, whether she chooses to earn a two-year degree and enter the workforce or transfer to a university for more education.”

“The Wake Tech Foundation is excited to offer this scholarship,” said Mort Congleton, Executive Vice President for College Development at Wake Tech. “This is Wake Tech’s way of investing in the future and celebrating all the potential this newest Wake County citizen represents – for herself and her family, and for the community.”

Dr. Scott also announced that the Wake Tech Foundation would award an additional scholarship to Baby Sridhar, born at Rex Hospital today shortly before the county's online population ticker reached one million. Parents Shobha Sridhar and her husband Sridhar Narasimhan had not yet named their son.

The rapid growth in Wake County’s population is one of the reasons Wake Tech enrollment is at record-breaking levels. The college serves an average of 1 in 8 Wake County adults. During the 2012-2013 academic year, the Wake Tech Foundation provided scholarships to 211 students. The total awarded exceeded $193,000.
