Wake Tech Launches Third MOOC Venture

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 4, 2014) - College students who need a little extra help with basic computer skills can now find it online. Wake Tech is offering its third MOOC, or Massive Open Online Course, in Computer Basics. The MOOC format is self-paced and free of charge, inviting large-scale participation and open access to higher education via the web. It is available to students anywhere in the world. Students do not earn college credit for taking the MOOC.

The Computer Basics MOOC is designed to improve computer literacy. It explains computer operating systems, how to use various computer applications, and how to view internet content with browsers. Students can sign up for the course directly here

This is Wake Tech’s third MOOC. Wake Tech became the first community college in the state (and one of the first in the nation) to offer a MOOC when it launched Introductory Algebra Review last year. That course supplements seated classes in developmental math and helps students prepare for the NC diagnostic math exam. The college launched its second MOOC in July. The Chemistry Concepts MOOC, or CheMOOC, covers several topics, including measurements, matter, energy, atomic theory, bonding, molecular structure, nomenclature, balancing equations, stoichiometry, solutions, acids and bases, gases, and basic organic chemistry. Other Wake Tech MOOCs are planned, to supplement instruction in areas such as college-level reading and writing fundamentals. http://mooc.waketech.edu
