Wake Tech Business Students Earn Market-Savvy Skills

RALEIGH, N.C. (December 9, 2014) – Wake Tech business students are becoming stock market savvy. The SunTrust Center for Financial Education and the Wake Tech Business Club are proud to announce the Fall 2014 Market Watch Investment Champions. The Market Watch simulation introduces students to investment strategies by allowing them to manage a simulated $100,000 portfolio under real conditions.

Student Joe Miles came in first place in the competition. His simulated investments earned $12,265 during the fall semester, which is an annualized rate of return of 58%. Students Michael Beam and Samantha Manzi came in second and third, respectively. Each of their portfolios averaged to surpass the S&P 500 by over 50%.

“I loved this game,” said Miles, “and I think it’s a great teaching tool! I was able to monitor market activity in real time, and I learned a lot about choosing and managing investments – knowledge I’m sure I’ll need and use in the future. At the same time, it was a lot of fun!”

More than 65 students participated in the competition, researching and “investing” in more than 150 companies. A few of the top investments included Kite Pharma (a cancer research firm), Go Pro Inc. (a camera and accessory firm), and Alcoa Aluminum. Market Watch is one of more than 30 events sponsored by the Sun Trust Center for Financial Education.
