Wake Tech Receives National Honor
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 6, 2015) - Wake Tech Community College has earned national recognition for its newly-redesigned developmental education program. Wake Tech has received the John Champaign Memorial Award for Outstanding Developmental Educational Program for 2015, from the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE). The prestigious award acknowledges Wake Tech’s innovative approach to developmental instruction and the creation of learning materials that are effective in meeting the needs of students. Nearly 60% of Wake Tech’s 27,000 curriculum students need some developmental courses.
“Our instructors have worked hard to redesign courses and streamline requirements for students in developmental courses,” says Laura Kalbaugh, Wake Tech’s Dean of Academic Success and Transition Resources. “They have individualized the program and made the path to completion clearer – while maintaining very high expectations for their students – and their work has paid off in greater student success. This recognition of their talent and effort is well deserved.”
Wake Tech’s developmental program includes integrated reading and writing (IRW), math, and college success courses. As part of a statewide curriculum redesign, Wake Tech has created developmental math and IRW courses that provide students the opportunity to complete their required developmental coursework in two semesters and sometimes in as little as 8 weeks.
The award was presented during the annual NADE conference on February 26 in Greenville, South Carolina. It honors John Champaign, who directed the Developmental Education Department at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigue, NY.
